Why it matters
UNRWA is the United Nations agency that, since 1949, has provided assistance to over 5 million Palestinian refugees in Gaza, the West Bank, Lebanon, Syria, and Jordan. It offers education, healthcare, food, clean water, shelter, and protection in regions marked by decades of occupation, exile, and violence.
UNRWA is often the only access point to humanitarian aid. Its schools have become shelters for hundreds of thousands of displaced people. Its staff deliver clean water, medicine, and food under extreme conditions, often at the risk of their own lives.
But the agency is under attack. In addition to a severe financial crisis, caused by the suspension of funding by several states, UNRWA is facing a systematic smear campaign led by the Israeli government, which questions its legitimacy, spreads accusations, and obstructs its work through diplomatic and media pressure.
In 2024, the Israeli Knesset approved a law banning UNRWA from operating within Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories, further restricting access to life-saving aid for civilians and deepening the humanitarian crisis.
Supporting UNRWA today means defending the right to humanitarian assistance, dignity, and the very existence of an entire people.
